چکیده

We propose that genetic encoding of self-assembling components greatly enhances the evolution of complex systems and provides an efficient platform for inductive generalization, i.e. the inductive derivation of a solution to a problem with a potentially infinite number of instances from a limited set of test examples. We exemplify this in simulations by evolving scalable circuitry for several problems. One of them, digital multiplication, has been intensively studied in recent years, where hitherto the evolutionary design of only specific small multipliers was achieved. The fact that this and other problems can be solved in full generality employing self-assembly sheds light on the evolutionary role of self-assembly in biology and is of relevance for the design of complex systems in nanoand bionanotechnology.

Self-Organized Segregation within an Evolving Population

An evolving population, in which individual members (‘agents’) adapt their behaviour according to past experience, is of central importance to many disciplines. Because of their limited knowledge and capabilities, agents are forced to make decisions based on inductive, rather than deductive, thinking. We show that a population of competing agents with similar capabilities and knowledge will ten...

Self-Organised Segregation within an Evolving Population

An evolving population, in which individual members (‘agents’) adapt their behaviour according to past experience, is of central importance to many disciplines. We show that a population of agents with similar brain-sizes will tend to self-...

Generating Automatic Projections by Means of Genetic Programming

The aim of inductive machine learning (ML) is to generate models that can make predictions from analysis of data sets. These data sets consist of a number of instances or examples, each example described by a set of attributes. It is known that the quality or relevance of the attributes of a data set is a key issue when trying to obtain models with a satisfactory level of generalization. There ...

Singular-Value Decomposition via Gradient and Self-Equivalent Flows

The task of finding the singular-value decomposition (SVD) of a finite-dimensional complex Iinear operator is here addressed via gradient flows evolving on groups of complex unitary matrices and associated self-equivalent flows. The work constitutes a generalization of that of Brockett on the diagonalization of real symmetric matrices via gradient flows on orthogonal matrices and associated iso...

Designing Enzymes in a Multi-Agent System based on a Genetic Algorithm

In this paper we present a genetic algorithm-based approach towards designing “enzymes” in a multi-agent system, where agents are defined as square smart blocks. In the real world an enzyme is an organic protein which catalyses a specific reaction. Here, we use it in the context of self-assembling blocks to characterize an assembly of blocks which is capable of producing another block assembly ...
